Investigating Minerals Lab Students tried to identify five unknown mineral samples by observing the color, luster, streak left behind when scratched across a streak plate, and the hardness of the mineral by trying to scratch the rock itself with a pencil, fingernail, penny, nail, butter knife, and quartz.
Rock Gallery Students brought in their best rocks and minerals to share with the class. They had to write two to three sentences about their rock and where they found it. Some students were able to determine what type of rock it was while others observed its properties.
Investigating Rocks Lab Students observed six rock samples, noticing their properties. Based on these properties, students identified them and grouped them into the three types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.
